King salmon fishing is the mainstay of fishing in Alaska, and if you take that trip you will likely learn that they are easier to catch than you might think – especially if you are with the right King salmon fishing guide!
One chilly morning we prepared ourselves for the briskness of the wind as our salmon fishing guide pointed his boat to a hot spot for salmon fishing. The scenery was breath-taking; snow capped mountains with a beautiful blue sky as the background. We were now on our way to fulfill our dream of Alaska King salmon fishing.
I normally do most of my fishing around Texas lakes, so this was a tremendous thing to be in For someone who spends most his time fishing on the east coast, it is quite a change of pace to be in Alaska fishing King salmon. What a thrill of a lifetime! The scenery is spectacular and everything about the trip makes it a little more distinct and memorable. And we hadn’t even started salmon fishing, yet!
Of all the species of salmon, Alaska King salmon is the most sought after. The rest are just pups when compared to these big dogs. An Alaskan King Salmon can way in over 100 pounds, and that’s not only a lot of fun, that’s a lot of good eating! The guide we hired for our King salmon fishing trip told us a lot of interesting fish tales while we were on our way out to the ‘honey hole’. I guess you can fish for salmon year round but he says it’s too cold early in the year to make it worth going out.
He told us that the King salmon swim really deep, even 100 feet below the surface. To be able to get a salmon bait down to them is by using a downrigger, which is a fishing rod-like device suspending a large weight by a steel cable. A clip attaches a fishing line to the weight. It all got a little confusing for me, so I’m glad our fishing guide was able to set everything up. He did all the work and we had all the fun.
We used frozen herring for bait and he actually set up several rods that we monitored while we’re salmon fishing. It wasn’t long until the first fish took our bait! It turns out it wasn’t the Alaska salmon we expected, but was a Silver salmon. But it was still fun and we were just getting started. In fact, several others took the bait on the other lines that our guide was setting up. Before that session was over, we had caught six King salmon and several Silver salmon that were keepers. We also caught and let several other smaller ones go.
This was one of my most exciting days of fishing. The Alaskan salmon we caught were so big I couldn’t help but just laugh. Well, laugh and massage my aching arms
It was amazing. Not only that, they made for a fine feast when we got them home.
If you want to take your own Alaskan fishing trip for salmon, I can give you a couple of good tips. There are several ports in southeastern Alaska, but I recommend that you go to Sitka. Of course, there are no roads connecting the port to the rest of the world so you’ll have to go there by airplane, but that makes it all the more fun and let’s you see even more beautiful scenery.
There are also many Alaska fishing trip packages available. By searching the Internet, you can find some great trips which offer very reasonable deals ranging from two to five days. Prices usually include just about everything except your airfare. Quite often, they even clean your fish for you!
An Alaskan salmon fishing trip is one that you won’t have to come home and tell your friend’s the fish stories about – you’ll have the proof to show them in the scrap book and on the dinner table!
